Area, so entry requirements depend mainly on your nationality, country of residence and the length of your stay. Citizens of many countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan and South Korea, can normally visit Italy for tourism without obtaining a visa in advance for stays of up to <\/span><b>90 days within any 180-day period<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travelers from countries that are not visa-exempt must obtain a <\/span><b>Schengen short-stay visa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before traveling. For most non-EU visitors, the passport used to enter Italy must generally be valid for at least <\/span><b>3 months beyond the planned date of departure from the Schengen Area<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and must have been issued within the previous 10 years.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Border authorities may also ask for information about the purpose and conditions of your trip, including accommodation details, a return or onward ticket and proof that you have sufficient funds for your stay. If you are an EU citizen, you can normally enter Italy using a valid passport or national identity card.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entry rules can change, so I always recommend checking the requirements for your specific nationality before booking. Non-EU travelers should also be aware of Europe\u2019s <\/span><b>Entry\/Exit System, or EES<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which digitally records entries and exits for short stays. These months usually offer the best balance between pleasant weather, manageable crowds and prices that are often lower than during the peak of summer.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your trip focuses heavily on beaches, islands and coastal destinations, June and September are particularly good months because the weather is usually warm enough for the sea without the full intensity of July and August. If your itinerary is mainly Rome, Florence, Venice and cultural sightseeing, May, September and early October are some of my favorite periods.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>SPRING: MARCH TO MAY<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spring is one of the best seasons for sightseeing in Italy. March can still be unpredictable, especially in northern Italy, while April and May are generally much more pleasant. Central and southern Italy tend to warm up earlier, whereas northern regions can remain cooler for longer.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May is probably one of the easiest months for a first trip because you can walk around cities for hours without dealing with the extreme heat that often arrives later in summer. The main thing to remember is that Easter can make Rome and other major destinations significantly busier, so prices and availability may change around those dates.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>SUMMER: JUNE TO AUGUST<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer makes sense if your main priority is the sea, islands or coastal destinations, but it is also the busiest and often the most expensive time of the year. July and August can become extremely hot, particularly in Rome, Florence, Naples, Sicily and other inland areas.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walking around Rome for 8 hours when temperatures are above 30\u00b0C is very different from looking at photos of Rome from an air-conditioned hotel room. The heat can make sightseeing much more tiring, especially if your itinerary is packed with outdoor attractions.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">August is also when many Italians take their own holidays, particularly around <\/span><b>Ferragosto on August 15<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Tourist destinations remain busy, but smaller local businesses may close or reduce their opening hours. If you are traveling for Sardinia, Sicily, Puglia or the Amalfi Coast, summer can be a great choice; if you are mainly interested in museums, historical sites and walking around cities, I would personally avoid peak July and August if possible<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>AUTUMN: SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">September is one of my favorite months in Italy because it is still warm, the sea is often beautiful and the temperatures are much more comfortable for walking around cities. It is one of the best periods if you want to combine cultural sightseeing with coastal destinations.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">October is also excellent for Rome, Florence, Tuscany and many parts of southern Italy. By November, temperatures become cooler, daylight hours are shorter and the weather becomes more unpredictable, but prices and crowds can also decrease significantly.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h6><b>WINTER: DECEMBER TO FEBRUARY<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winter is underrated if you care more about cities, museums, architecture and food than beaches. Rome, Florence, Naples, Bologna and Turin are all completely enjoyable during the colder months, particularly if you prefer traveling with fewer tourists around you.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern Italy can become very cold, while the Alps and Dolomites enter ski season. You will have shorter days and less predictable weather, but you may also find lower accommodation prices and a much quieter atmosphere in destinations that are extremely crowded during the summer.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8eb55fa elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"8eb55fa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c224804 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c224804\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">WHEN WOULD I PERSONALLY GO?\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d6e087d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d6e087d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a classic first trip including Rome, Florence and Venice, I would choose <\/span><b>May or late September<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For southern Italy and the coast, I would choose <\/span><b>June or September<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while for cities, museums and food-focused travel I would happily visit in October or even during winter.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b6dcfa elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"3b6dcfa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fdca58d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"fdca58d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED IN ITALY?\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f11da50 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f11da50\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you only have 5 days, I would choose 1 or 2 places. With 7 days, I would recommend a maximum of 3 destinations; with 10 days, you can comfortably combine 3 major areas, while 14 days give you enough time to mix cities with countryside, coast or smaller towns. With 3 weeks, you can build a much more complete trip without spending half of your holiday moving luggage around.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that a 2-hour train journey is never just 2 hours. You still need to pack, check out, get to the station, board the train, reach your new accommodation and check in. One thing I always want people to understand is that northern, central and southern Italy feel very different from one another. There is no single Italian experience, and the country changes enormously depending on the region.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6a56603 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"6a56603\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5985dee elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5985dee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">SOUTHERN ITALY: WHERE I FEEL THE WARMEST SIDE OF ITALIAN CULTURE\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0a6d236 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0a6d236\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personally, I am a huge lover of southern Italy. If you want to experience what I consider one of the warmest and most expressive sides of Italian culture, I would absolutely spend part of your trip in the south.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where I particularly love the relationship people have with food, family, conversation, local traditions and the huge variety of accents. Someone else may prefer the north, and that is completely fine, but this is the part of Italy that emotionally feels the strongest to me.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h6><b>Naples and Campania<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naples is one of the first places I would choose. The food alone makes it worth visiting, but I also love the energy of the city, the way people communicate and the very strong local identity. From Naples, you can easily continue toward Sorrento, Pompeii, Capri and the Amalfi Coast.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naples also has a reputation for being chaotic or unsafe that, in my opinion, is often exaggerated by people who have never properly experienced the city. You still need normal city awareness, especially in crowded areas, but I would absolutely not remove Naples from an itinerary because of its reputation.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h6><b>Amalfi Coast<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Amalfi Coast is expensive, and during peak season it can become very expensive. However, in my opinion, it is still worth the hype.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The landscapes are spectacular, the towns are beautiful and it is one of those places that actually looks like the photos you see online. The real issue is not whether it is beautiful; the issue is the price and the crowds. If you want to visit, plan carefully and do not expect it to be a cheap coastal vacation.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>Puglia<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I wanted beautiful sea, amazing seafood and a strong southern atmosphere, Puglia would be extremely high on my list. For beaches, I would particularly look at <\/span><b>Salento<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with places such as Porto Cesareo, Punta Prosciutto, Otranto, Gallipoli and Santa Maria di Leuca.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further north, the <\/span><b>Valle d\u2019Itria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers a completely different landscape, with countryside, white villages and the famous <\/span><b>trulli<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the traditional cone-roofed houses associated especially with Alberobello. Another beautiful experience is staying in a <\/span><b>masseria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a traditional rural estate, many of which have been restored and turned into elegant hotels and countryside retreats.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6><b>Sicily<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sicily deserves much more than 2 days added to the end of an already packed itinerary. You can easily build an entire trip around the island because it offers historical cities, beaches, countryside, food, archaeological sites and Mount Etna.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I had enough time, I would absolutely include an Etna experience and organize part of the trip around local food. Sicily is also a destination where the experience can change enormously depending on whether you focus on cities, coastal areas or road-tripping through smaller towns.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-41ebbc6 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"41ebbc6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-08d1a28 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"08d1a28\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">CENTRAL ITALY: ROME AND TUSCANY\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7b815e1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7b815e1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h6><b>Rome<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rome is non-negotiable for me on a first trip to Italy. I travel a lot, and it still remains one of the most beautiful cities in the world in my eyes.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would give Rome at least 3 full days. Between the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Vatican, historical center, Trastevere and the different neighborhoods, you already have enough to fill several days without rushing. Rome is one of those cities where walking around without a strict plan can be just as rewarding as visiting the major monuments.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>Tuscany<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuscany is one of the most complete regions in Italy because it combines cities, countryside, food, wine, historical towns and beautiful landscapes. Florence is obviously one of the main highlights, but Tuscany is much more than Florence.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have enough time, I would combine Florence with areas such as Chianti, Val d\u2019Orcia, Siena, San Gimignano and the surrounding countryside. This is one of the places where renting a car can significantly improve your trip, particularly if you want to stay in smaller villages, wineries or countryside properties.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32f3f87 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"32f3f87\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ad21959 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ad21959\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">NORTHERN ITALY: CITIES, LAKES AND MOUNTAINS\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b92527f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b92527f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern Italy offers a completely different experience from the south, with elegant cities, lakes, Alpine landscapes and excellent transport connections.<\/span><\/p><h6><b>Venice<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venice is absolutely worth visiting at least once. If possible, I would stay overnight rather than treating it only as a day trip, because early mornings and evenings feel completely different once many of the daytime visitors leave.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One full day can cover the main attractions, but 2 nights allow you to experience the city more calmly and walk away from the busiest streets around Piazza San Marco and Rialto.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>Turin<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turin is one of my favorite Italian cities, the city where i grew up. It is elegant, organized and architecturally beautiful, with huge squares, arcades, historic caf\u00e9s and a much more relaxed atmosphere than Milan.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also still overlooked by many international visitors, which I think is a shame because it offers a very different side of northern Italy.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>Milan<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milan is not personally one of my favorite Italian cities, but that does not mean it is not worth visiting. If you love fashion, shopping, design, museums and a more international atmosphere, Milan can be excellent.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you only have 7 days and your priorities are history, traditional architecture, coast or food culture, I would personally prioritize other destinations first. However, if shopping and fashion are a major part of your trip, Milan makes much more sense.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>Lake Como<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, in my opinion, Lake Como is worth the hype. It is also expensive, especially in the most famous towns and during peak season.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The combination of mountains, villas, small lakeside villages and the lake itself makes it a beautiful destination, but I would budget carefully rather than treating it as an inexpensive extension of a Milan trip.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>Cinque Terre<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cinque Terre is also worth the hype, particularly if you are staying in northern or central Italy and still want to experience colorful coastal villages and the sea.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I compare 3 extremely popular destinations, I personally find the <\/span><b>Amalfi Coast the most expensive overall, followed by Lake Como and then Cinque Terre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. All 3 are beautiful, but all 3 need to be budgeted properly.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>South Tyrol and the Dolomites<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you love mountains, northern Italy becomes a completely different type of trip. Around <\/span><b>South Tyrol, Alto Adige, Bolzano and Merano<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you are surrounded by Alpine landscapes, mountain towns, rivers and a mix of Italian and Central European influences.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For even more dramatic landscapes, continue into the <\/span><b>Dolomites<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where areas such as Val Gardena, Alpe di Siusi, Seceda and Val di Funes offer some of the most impressive mountain scenery in Europe. This region is perfect for hiking, skiing, scenic drives and travelers who want nature rather than cities.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c3ad98b elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"c3ad98b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-03851d6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"03851d6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">SARDINIA\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f538d1f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f538d1f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your priority is the sea, Sardinia deserves a separate mention. In my opinion, Sardinia has the best sea in Italy and some of the most beautiful water you will find anywhere in the world.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would not necessarily add it to a short 7-day first trip because getting around the island requires more planning, but for a summer vacation focused on beaches, Sardinia is very difficult to beat.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6a307d6 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"6a307d6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-72c1478 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"72c1478\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">7-DAY ITALY ITINERARY\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3bc8e8b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3bc8e8b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a first trip, I would keep it simple: <\/span><b>Rome for 3 days, Florence for 2 days and Venice for 2 days<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Personally, I usually choose Italo, although both work well and I would ultimately compare schedule and price before booking.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-speed trains make city-to-city travel extremely easy. You do not need to arrive at the station 1 hour early as you would at an airport; you simply need enough time to find your platform and board without stress.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regional trains are useful for smaller towns and shorter distances. However, if I see several of these signs together, I will usually check reviews and prices carefully before deciding.<\/span><\/p><h6><b>ITALIANS EAT SLOWLY<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating in Italy is not supposed to be something you finish in 10 minutes so that you can immediately leave. For many Italians, sitting at the table is an important part of social life, whether you are having lunch with family, dinner with friends or simply taking time to enjoy a meal.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That does not mean your waiter should disappear for 40 minutes, but service can feel less rushed than what many Americans are used to. A waiter who is not asking you every 5 minutes whether everything is okay is not necessarily ignoring you.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you are ready to leave, simply ask for the bill by saying, <\/span><b>\u201cIl conto, per favore.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Do not always expect the check to appear automatically as soon as you finish eating.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>CAPPUCCINO AFTER LUNCH<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have probably seen TikTok videos of Italian baristas looking completely horrified because somebody ordered a cappuccino after lunch.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We joke about this a lot, but the truth is that nobody actually cares what time you drink your cappuccino. It is culturally uncommon for Italians to drink one after a large meal, but if you want a cappuccino at 15:00, 18:00 or 21:00, order it. You are not committing a crime against Italy.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>REALISTIC FOOD COSTS<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My personal idea of normal everyday prices is relatively simple. A breakfast consisting of a cornetto and cappuccino should cost around <\/span><b>\u20ac5 ($6)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or less in a normal bar. A quick lunch can reasonably cost around <\/span><b>\u20ac15 ($17)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and I would expect a normal pizza meal to be around the same price. For dinner, I would budget around <\/span><b>\u20ac40 ($45)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a regular restaurant meal.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously, destinations such as Venice, central Rome, Milan, Lake Como and the Amalfi Coast can easily be more expensive, and high-end restaurants belong to a completely different category.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>TIPPING IN ITALY<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tipping culture in Italy is very different from the United States. Personally, I almost never leave a tip unless the waiter has been particularly kind, the service has been exceptional or the experience has genuinely impressed me.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You do not need to automatically add 20% to every restaurant bill. Choose accommodation in an area where you feel comfortable returning at night, remain aware of your surroundings and do not become so intoxicated that you cannot confidently find your way back.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unwanted comments or attention can happen, but you do not owe anyone a conversation. If someone is making you uncomfortable, ignore them, move away and continue walking.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>TAXIS<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one area where I would pay particular attention. Whenever possible, I prefer ordering a taxi through an official taxi app or using Uber where it is available, rather than accepting random transportation offers from people approaching tourists around airports or stations.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I take a taxi from a taxi rank or directly from the street, I personally ask whether card payment is accepted before getting in. I also prefer having a general idea of what the ride should cost and making sure the meter is being used when appropriate.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some drivers may claim that card payments are unavailable or that they only accept cash, so asking beforehand avoids unnecessary arguments at the end of the ride.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>COMMON STREET SCAMS<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not automatically accept bracelets, roses or other objects offered to you by street sellers, even when somebody initially tells you they are free. In many cases, the person will later ask you for money.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you genuinely want to support the person selling something, that is completely different and can be a kind gesture. However, if you do not want to pay, politely refuse from the beginning and continue walking.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same applies to people offering unsolicited help around ticket machines or transportation areas. If you did not ask for assistance, you do not need to engage.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>DO ITALIANS DISLIKE AMERICANS?<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, I do not think Italians generally have anything against Americans, or any other nationality.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stereotype usually comes from seeing tourists being extremely loud, disrespectful or behaving in ways that feel inappropriate for the place they are visiting. However, Italians themselves are hardly known for being silent, so I would not overthink it.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The real issue is simple: do not be rude. Be respectful, do not expect everyone to speak perfect English and remember that you are visiting somebody else\u2019s country.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Italians speak some English, especially in major cities and tourist areas, but not everyone does. Learning a few basic words such as <\/span><b>buongiorno, grazie, per favore and scusi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is always appreciated.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6><b>MEAL TIMES<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My own normal schedule in Italy is roughly breakfast around 08:00, lunch around 12:00 and dinner around 21:00. This obviously changes between families, regions and individual routines, but one important thing for American travelers to understand is that eating dinner at 17:00 is extremely early by Italian standards.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you walk around at 17:00 expecting every restaurant to be serving dinner, you may find that many places are still closed. EATING ONLY BESIDE TOURIST ATTRACTIONS<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being directly in front of the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain or another major attraction does not automatically mean a restaurant is bad, but you should check prices and reviews before sitting down.<\/span><\/p><h6><b>5. EXPECTING EVERYONE TO SPEAK ENGLISH<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Italy receives huge numbers of international visitors, but that does not mean every Italian speaks English. Learn a few basic words and be patient when communicating.<\/span><\/p><h6><b>6. IGNORING ZTL SIGNS<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are driving, pay attention to restricted traffic zones. EXPECTING DINNER AT 17:00<\/b><\/h6><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some restaurants may be open, particularly in tourist areas, but many traditional restaurants will not yet be serving dinner.<\/span><\/p><h6><b>9.
