51 BEST & MOST UNIQUE THINGS TO DO IN THAILAND

Thailand is one of those countries where simply visiting the famous landmarks barely scratches the surface.

Some of the experiences you remember most might have nothing to do with a famous temple or viewpoint. You could train Muay Thai in Bangkok, learn to cook northern Thai food in Chiang Mai, wake up inside a floating bungalow surrounded by rainforest, climb limestone cliffs above the sea, explore ancient ruins by bicycle or spend an entire afternoon getting a massage, head spa and beauty treatments.

After spending several months in Thailand, including almost 3 months living in Bangkok and traveling to Phuket and the Phi Phi Islands, I wanted this guide to focus on experiences that are actually memorable rather than simply listing famous attractions.

Whether this is your first trip or your fifth, here are some of the best and most unique things to do in Thailand.

CULTURAL & UNIQUELY THAI EXPERIENCES

1. Take a Traditional Thai Cooking Class

Instead of spending your entire trip simply eating Thai food, learn how some of it is actually made.

Classes often introduce the ingredients behind Thai cooking, from lemongrass and galangal to Thai basil, chilies and coconut milk, before teaching you how to prepare several dishes yourself.

Chiang Mai is particularly good for this because many experiences also include a local market visit beforehand.

2. Train Muay Thai in Thailand

You do not need to be a fighter to try Muay Thai.

Many gyms welcome complete beginners and teach basic punches, kicks, knees and combinations during introductory sessions.

It is physical, exhausting and much more memorable than doing another normal workout while traveling.

AUDREY’S EXPERIENCE

While living in Bangkok, boxing became part of my normal routine

If you already enjoy fitness, trying Muay Thai while you are actually in Thailand is something I would definitely recommend.

3. Watch a Real Muay Thai Fight

Watching Muay Thai live is completely different from seeing clips online.

The traditional music, pre-fight rituals and atmosphere make it interesting even if combat sports are normally not your thing.

If you don’t want to train yourself, this is probably the easiest way to experience this side of Thai culture.

4. Get a Traditional Thai Massage

This one is famous for a reason.

Traditional Thai massage usually involves pressure, stretching and assisted movement rather than simply lying still while someone applies oil.

You can find extremely simple local massage shops as well as beautiful high-end spas.

5. Experience Songkran

If your trip falls during Thai New Year in April, prepare to get wet.

Songkran combines religious and family traditions with what has become one of the largest public water fights in the world.

Entire streets can turn into enormous celebrations.

Do not carry anything you cannot protect from water.

6. Experience Yi Peng & Loy Krathong

Northern Thailand becomes especially beautiful during the annual lantern festivals.

Yi Peng is famous for lanterns rising into the night sky, while Loy Krathong traditionally involves floating decorated baskets on rivers and waterways.

Because dates follow the lunar calendar, check your exact travel year before planning around them.

7. Make Your Own Thai Flower Garland

Thai floral garlands, or phuang malai, are used for religious offerings, ceremonies, decoration and expressions of respect.

Some workshops allow you to learn the traditional technique yourself using jasmine and other flowers.

It is a quieter cultural experience than most of the famous Thailand activities and gives you a completely different introduction to local traditions.

BANGKOK: EXPERIENCES BEYOND THE CLASSIC SIGHTS

8. Get Lost Inside Chatuchak Weekend Market

Chatuchak was one of my favorite places for shopping while living in Bangkok.

It is enormous.

You can find clothes, shoes, accessories, vintage pieces, homeware, art, plants, food and a huge amount of random things you had absolutely no intention of buying.

The point is not to follow a perfect route.

Walk around and see what you find.

AUDREY’S TIP

If you enjoy shopping, leave space in your suitcase.Bangkok already has an incredible shopping scene, but Chatuchak was one of the places I particularly loved.

Give yourself several hours rather than treating it as a quick stop.

9. Take a Long-Tail Boat Through Bangkok’s Canals

Seeing Bangkok from the water completely changes the city.

A boat ride through the Thonburi canals takes you past wooden houses, temples and local neighborhoods that look completely different from the skyscrapers of central Bangkok.

It is one of the easiest ways to understand how important waterways were to the city’s history.

10. Explore Bangkok’s Amulet Market

Near Bangkok’s old town, you can find an entire market dedicated to Buddhist amulets and religious objects.

Collectors carefully examine tiny pieces, sometimes using magnifying glasses to inspect details and authenticity.

These are religious and spiritual objects, so approach the market with respect rather than treating everything as a funny souvenir.

11. Eat Your Way Through Chinatown at Night

Yaowarat is one of Bangkok’s best places for an evening food crawl.

14. Build Your Own Bangkok Beauty & Wellness Day

One side of Bangkok I did not expect to enjoy so much was its beauty and wellness world.

AUDREY’S EXPERIENCE

I live in Korea, so I am extremely used to being surrounded by beauty clinics, skincare and self-care services.

Bangkok genuinely surprised me.

I found excellent beauty and wellness treatments, and while living there my own routine included boxing, gym, ice baths and sauna.

If you enjoy this world, I would absolutely include a self-care afternoon in your trip.

CHIANG MAI & NORTHERN THAILAND

15. Visit Chiang Rai’s White Temple

The White Temple looks traditional from a distance.

Then you start looking at the details.

The artwork combines Buddhist symbolism with contemporary and sometimes unexpected imagery, making it completely different from most temples in Thailand.

It is also important to know that this is not an ancient temple. It is a modern artistic project.

NATURE EXPERIENCES WORTH TRAVELING FOR

24. Sleep in a Floating Bungalow at Khao Sok

This is one of the Thailand experiences I think could completely change someone’s image of the country.

WHICH EXPERIENCES SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

The best Thailand itinerary combines different kinds of experiences rather than simply collecting activities.

For a first trip, I would try to include at least 1 cultural experience, 1 food experience, 1 wellness experience, 1 nature experience and 1 activity connected specifically to your interests.

If culture interests you most, prioritize Muay Thai, a cooking class, local festivals, Sukhothai and northern Thailand.

If food is one of the main reasons you are traveling, combine a cooking class, street-food tour, local markets, Chinatown and regional food such as khao soi.

If you want adventure, consider Khao Sok, Railay climbing, Koh Tao diving, kayaking or exploring caves.

If you love wellness, Thailand makes it very easy to combine massage, beauty treatments, spas and relaxed island days with a normal sightseeing itinerary.

And if this is your second or third trip, use this list to move beyond Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket and explore places such as Sukhothai, Khao Sok, Lampang, Udon Thani or Mae Hong Son.

FINAL TIPS BEFORE BOOKING EXPERIENCES IN THAILAND

Thailand is relatively easy to travel spontaneously, so you do not need to book your entire itinerary months in advance.

Prioritize reservations for experiences with limited availability or specific dates, particularly festivals, wildlife experiences, diving courses, special accommodation, Khao Sok stays and activities that you would genuinely be disappointed to miss.

Leave room for everything else.

You may discover a market you had never heard about, decide to stay an extra day on an island, find a restaurant you want to revisit or simply realize that after several days of moving around, you would rather spend tomorrow getting a massage and doing absolutely nothing.

And remember that price has very little to do with how memorable something will be.

You can spend hundreds of dollars on a special resort and love it.

You can also spend almost nothing wandering through Chatuchak, eating at a market or watching sunset somewhere beautiful.

The goal is not to do as many activities as possible. It is to choose the ones you will actually remember.
