Best & Most Unique Things to Do in Italy

As an Italian citizen myself one thing I wish more travelers understood is that experiencing the country properly has very little to do with how many famous monuments you manage to photograph.

Of course, you should see Rome, Florence, Venice and the places you have dreamed about for years. However, some of the experiences that make Italy special happen away from the obvious sightseeing route: learning how to make pasta with an Italian family, walking through vineyards in Tuscany, searching for truffles with a local hunter and his dog, taking a boat through the islands of Sardinia, watching an opera inside a historical theatre, learning traditional crafts or simply eating something exactly where it originated.

Italy also changes enormously from one region to another. A food experience in Naples has very little in common with a wine weekend in Piedmont; the Dolomites feel completely different from Sicily, and Sardinia can feel like another country compared with Milan.

For this guide, I selected the experiences I think are genuinely worth considering if you want to go beyond simply collecting landmarks. Some are iconic, some are traditional, some are slightly unusual, and others are things I personally love after growing up and living in Italy.

CULTURAL & TRADITIONAL EXPERIENCES

1. Take a Fresh Pasta-Making Class

If there is one Italian experience I would recommend almost universally, it is learning how to make fresh pasta. A good class is not simply about following a recipe; you learn how the dough should feel, how different shapes are made and why pasta traditions change dramatically between regions.

I would choose a small class hosted by a local cook, ideally in a home or small kitchen, rather than a huge commercial workshop. In Bologna you might learn tagliatelle or tortellini, while in Puglia the focus could be orecchiette.

2. Make Pizza in Naples

Pizza exists everywhere in Italy, but Naples is where I would turn it into an actual experience. A pizza class usually introduces you to the dough, fermentation, shaping and the extremely hot ovens used for Neapolitan pizza.

Some classes are surprisingly affordable, while more elaborate workshops with drinks, extra dishes or private instruction can cost much more. For a normal group class, however, this remains one of the more accessible food experiences in Italy.

3. Learn to Make Orecchiette with Local Women in Bari

In Bari Vecchia, handmade orecchiette are still deeply connected with everyday local life. Some workshops allow travelers to learn directly from local women who have been making the pasta for years.

This is exactly the type of activity I prefer because it connects food with the people and traditions behind it rather than treating cooking as entertainment alone.

4. Join a Traditional Mask-Making Workshop in Venice

Venetian masks become much more interesting when you understand how they are actually made. Instead of buying a mass-produced souvenir, join an artisan workshop where you can decorate or create your own mask and learn about its historical connection with Venice and Carnival.

It also gives you something genuinely personal to take home, which I personally find much more meaningful than buying another generic souvenir.

5. Learn Traditional Venetian Rowing

A gondola ride is iconic, but learning how Venetians actually row is far more interactive. Small experiences introduce the traditional standing rowing technique used in the lagoon, often in quieter canals away from the busiest tourist routes.

If you want something specifically Venetian rather than simply another boat ride, I would choose this.

6. Visit a Murano Glass Workshop

Murano glass is internationally famous, but I would avoid turning the experience into nothing more than walking into a souvenir shop. Look for an actual glassblowing demonstration or artisan workshop where you can see the process, understand the techniques and, in some cases, create a small glass object yourself.

Private masterclasses can become expensive, but standard demonstrations and introductory experiences are much more accessible.

7. Learn Florentine Leather Craftsmanship

Florence has a long connection with leatherwork, and workshops give you the opportunity to understand the craft rather than simply shopping for finished products.

Depending on the class, you might create a wallet, notebook cover, belt or other small leather item while learning basic cutting, stitching and finishing techniques.

8. Watch an Opera at Teatro alla Scala

If opera interests you even slightly, seeing a performance at La Scala is completely different from simply touring the theatre during the day.

Ticket prices vary enormously depending on the performance and seat. Affordable categories exist, while premium seats for important performances can cost several times more. If you want the experience without spending a fortune, check the programme early and look at the lower-priced seating sections.

9. Attend an Opera in Verona’s Roman Arena

During the summer opera season, Verona’s ancient arena becomes one of the most spectacular performance venues in Italy.

Even if you are not normally an opera fan, the combination of music, scale and location makes it a completely different experience from a standard theatre performance. Basic seating can be reasonably priced, while the best seats can easily move into premium categories.

10. Hunt for Truffles with a Trifulau and Dog

Truffle hunting is one of the most interesting countryside experiences you can add to an Italy itinerary. You walk through woodland with a local truffle hunter and trained dog while learning how truffles grow, how they are found and why different seasons produce different varieties.

Piedmont is particularly famous for white truffles, while Tuscany also offers excellent experiences. Basic hunts are cheaper than experiences that include lunch, wine or a cooking class, but this is generally not one of the cheapest activities on the list.

11. Taste Barolo in the Langhe

The Langhe hills are one of the best places in Italy for travelers who genuinely enjoy wine. Instead of simply ordering Barolo at dinner, visit the region where it is produced and spend time at smaller wineries learning about Nebbiolo, aging and the differences between vineyards.

Autumn is especially atmospheric because it overlaps with truffle season, although wine experiences are available throughout much of the year.

12. Spend a Day Wine Tasting in Chianti

Tuscany is one of those places where wine tasting actually improves the itinerary rather than becoming an activity added simply because you are in Italy.

I would choose smaller wineries where you can learn about production and walk through the property instead of joining a rushed tour visiting several places only to drink quickly and leave. Private wine drivers and luxury tastings can become significantly more expensive, but normal winery experiences usually fall into a moderate category.

13. Visit a Parmigiano Reggiano Dairy

If you love food, go to Emilia-Romagna. Around Parma and Modena, you can visit dairies producing Parmigiano Reggiano and see how the enormous wheels are made and aged.

The scale of the process becomes much more impressive once you see storage rooms filled with thousands of wheels. Go in the morning when production is actually taking place.

14. Discover Traditional Balsamic Vinegar in Modena

Real traditional balsamic vinegar has very little in common with the inexpensive supermarket version many travelers know.

15. Eat Your Way Through Palermo’s Street Markets

Palermo is one of my favorite places to recommend for travelers who want to understand Sicily through food.

Explore markets such as Ballarò or Capo and try Sicilian street-food classics rather than limiting yourself to formal restaurants. You can spend very little if you explore independently, while organized food tours cost more because they include multiple tastings and a guide.

16. Join a Bacaro and Cicchetti Crawl

One of my favorite alternatives to a conventional Venice dinner is moving between small bacari, ordering cicchetti and having a glass of wine at each stop.

17. Visit an Olive Oil Estate

Olive oil is so normal in Italian cooking that visitors often overlook how much work and regional variation exist behind it.

Visit an olive estate during harvest season if possible, learn how the fruit is pressed and taste fresh oil properly rather than treating it as something automatically placed on a table. Experiences that include meals or private estate tours cost more, but standard tastings remain relatively accessible.

NATURE, COASTS & ISLAND EXPERIENCES

18. Sail Through La Maddalena Archipelago

Sardinia has, in my opinion, the best sea in Italy and some of the most beautiful water in the world. If you want to understand why, spend a day exploring the La Maddalena Archipelago by boat.

Shared boat trips are much more affordable than private charters and normally include several swimming stops around the islands. Private sailing boats and luxury charters can cost several times more, but for most travelers I would simply book a good shared excursion.

AUDREY’S TIP

Sardinia is not where I would go for only 2 rushed days. If you make the effort to fly or ferry to the island, stay long enough to explore properly, especially if beaches are one of the main reasons for your trip.

19. Take a Boat Around Capri

Capri is much more impressive from the water than from a packed shopping street in the middle of the day.

Shared boat tours around the island are relatively affordable and give you access to the cliffs, caves and coastline. Private boats are a completely different price category and can easily cost hundreds of euros, so do not use private-charter prices as the benchmark for the normal experience.

20. Hike the Path of the Gods

The Sentiero degli Dei, or Path of the Gods, gives you one of the best ways to experience the Amalfi Coast without spending your entire day inside a car or bus.

21. Climb Mount Etna

Etna is not simply something to look at from a distance. Guided excursions allow you to explore volcanic landscapes, lava fields and higher areas of one of Europe’s most famous active volcanoes.

Shorter tours exist, but the more interesting guided excursions that reach higher volcanic areas usually cost enough to place this activity in the expensive category. Conditions and permitted access change, so this is one experience where I would book with a legitimate guide.

22. Explore the Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands offer volcanic landscapes, beaches and island life north of Sicily.

23. Watch Stromboli Erupt After Dark

24. Hike in the Dolomites

The Dolomites are one of the parts of Italy that surprise travelers who associate the country mainly with historical cities and Mediterranean beaches.

26. Swim in Salento

Puglia has some of the most beautiful coastline in mainland Italy. Around Salento, places such as Porto Cesareo, Punta Prosciutto, Otranto and the coastline toward Santa Maria di Leuca give you clear water without requiring a flight to an island.

27. Stay in a Trullo

The trulli of Puglia are among the most recognizable forms of traditional architecture in southern Italy.

29. Sleep on a Tuscan Agriturismo

An agriturismo lets you stay on a working or historically agricultural property, often surrounded by vineyards, olive trees or countryside.

For me, this makes far more sense in Tuscany than sleeping every night inside Florence and taking rushed day trips into the countryside. Standard agriturismo stays tend to be less expensive than luxury wine estates, so I would classify the normal experience below the premium level.

One of the few places where I actively recommend renting a car is the Tuscan countryside.

42. Spend a Day on the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is expensive, crowded and sometimes logistically annoying; however, I still think it is worth experiencing.

WHICH EXPERIENCES SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

You obviously do not need to do all 44 experiences. The best Italy itinerary combines different kinds of activities rather than filling every day with famous attractions.

For a first trip, I would try to include at least 1 food experience, 1 cultural or artisan experience, 1 countryside or nature experience and 1 activity that is specific to the region you are visiting.

If food is your priority, look at Bologna and Emilia-Romagna for pasta, Parmigiano Reggiano and balsamic vinegar; Naples for pizza; Sicily for street food; Piedmont for Barolo and truffles; Tuscany for wine; or Puglia for orecchiette and olive oil.

If you are more interested in traditional culture, consider Venetian mask-making, Murano glass, Florentine leatherwork, opera, Carnival or the Palio.

If nature is the main reason you travel, look at Sardinia, Etna, the Aeolian Islands, the Dolomites, Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast.

If this is your second or third trip to Italy, move beyond the classic Rome, Florence and Venice itinerary. Spend time in Puglia, Sicily, Sardinia, Piedmont, South Tyrol or smaller parts of Tuscany instead.

Italy becomes much more interesting once you stop trying to experience the entire country on one vacation.

FINAL TIPS BEFORE BOOKING EXPERIENCES IN ITALY

Book experiences with limited capacity in advance, particularly cooking classes, artisan workshops, opera performances, special accommodation, boat trips during summer and anything connected with major seasonal events.

At the same time, do not book every hour of your vacation.

Some of the best Italian experiences are extremely simple: finding a tiny restaurant because you searched in Italian instead of English, spending 3 hours over lunch, discovering a local sagra that was not in your original itinerary or driving through Tuscany and stopping because you liked the view.

Also remember that the most expensive experience is not automatically the best one. You can spend hundreds of euros on a private boat on the Amalfi Coast, but swimming in Sardinia, walking through a local food market or sitting in a piazza with an aperitivo may become just as memorable.

After growing up in Italy, that is probably the main thing I would want visitors to understand: do the experiences you genuinely care about, but leave enough time to actually enjoy the country.
